Subscriptions (Recharge and other subscription apps)

Let shoppers subscribe to their recommended products straight from the quiz results page. Each recommended product that has a subscription plan gets a One-time / Subscribe & save choice with your delivery frequencies and the subscription price, and the cart is built with the plan already applied.

It works with Recharge and every other subscription app built on Shopify's subscription system (Shopify Subscriptions, Skio, Loop, Stay AI, Smartrr, Appstle, Seal and more), and with WooCommerce Subscriptions on WooCommerce. There is nothing to connect: no API key, no theme code, no extra app.

Available on: Starter plan and above · Platforms: Shopify and WooCommerce · Off by default — turn it on per quiz.

What shoppers see

On the results page, for each recommended product with a subscription plan:

  • One-time purchase and Subscribe & save options, with both prices and a savings badge (for example Save 10%).
  • A delivery frequency picker using your plans (for example Deliver every month, Every 2 months). Up to three frequencies show as buttons; more show as a dropdown.
  • Subscription-only products show only the subscribe option, with a short note.
  • The order summary shows the chosen frequency under the product and uses the subscription price in the subtotal.
  • View cart and Checkout add every product with the shopper's choice: subscribed products on their plan, the rest as one-time. Subscriptions and one-time products can be bought in the same checkout.

Products without a subscription plan look and work exactly as before. If a product has a plan on only some of its variants (for example only the Red option), the other variants are sold one-time.

How it works

On Shopify, every subscription app creates its plans with Shopify's own subscription system (selling plans), and your storefront shows those plans for every product. When the results page loads, the quiz reads the recommended products' plans from your storefront. Because it reads them live, new plans, price changes and removed plans show up immediately. Checkout is your normal Shopify checkout, and the subscription is created by your subscription app as usual.

On WooCommerce, the ShopperQuiz plugin reads your WooCommerce Subscriptions plans and adds products to the cart with the chosen plan. Checkout is your normal WooCommerce checkout.

Set up on Shopify

  1. Create a subscription plan in your subscription app and add the products you recommend in quizzes (see your app below).
  2. In ShopperQuiz, open Quiz Builder → Results Screen → Subscriptions and turn on Offer subscribe & save on results. (You can also switch quizzes on and off under Integrations → Recharge & subscription apps → Manage.)
  3. Choose which option is selected by default (Subscribe & save is recommended), and adjust the labels if you like.
  4. Click Save, then open Preview or take your live quiz to check it.

Your subscription app

AppWhat to do
Shopify Subscriptions (free, by Shopify)In the app, create a subscription plan (delivery frequencies and discount) and add products. To make a product subscription-only, open the product in Shopify and tick Only sell this product with these purchase options.
RechargeRecharge stores on the Shopify Checkout Integration (the standard Recharge setup) work out of the box. Create your subscription plans in Recharge as usual; Recharge publishes them to Shopify. No Recharge API key or storefront script is needed.
Skio, Loop, Stay AI, Smartrr, Appstle, Seal and other subscription appsCreate your subscription plans (sometimes called selling plans, subscription groups or purchase options) in the app and add products. Any app that shows a subscribe option on your Shopify product pages works.
Check a product

If a product shows a subscribe option on its own product page in your store, it will show one in the quiz results too.

Set up on WooCommerce

  1. Install and activate WooCommerce Subscriptions (version 9.0 or later recommended).
  2. Update the ShopperQuiz plugin to version 1.1.0 or later (Plugins → Installed Plugins).
  3. Give products a subscription option. Either:
    • Subscription plans on regular products — in WooCommerce Subscriptions 9.0+ (or with the All Products for WooCommerce Subscriptions extension on older versions), add storewide or product subscription plans so shoppers can buy once or subscribe; or
    • Subscription products — products of type Simple subscription or Variable subscription. These are subscription-only.
  4. In ShopperQuiz, turn on Quiz Builder → Results Screen → Subscriptions for your quiz and save.

With plugin 1.0.0 the results page works as before; subscription products can still be added to the cart, but shoppers don't see the subscribe & save choice. The Integrations → WooCommerce Subscriptions → Manage drawer tells you if the plugin needs updating.

Settings

All in Quiz Builder → Results Screen → Subscriptions, per quiz:

The options use your quiz's widget styles (accent color, borders, corners), and they are built for mobile, with large tap targets.

The Manage drawer

Integrations → Recharge & subscription apps (on WooCommerce: WooCommerce Subscriptions) → Manage shows:

  • On your store — how many products have a subscription plan, how many are subscription-only, and which subscription app was detected.
  • Turn on per quiz — a switch for each quiz.
  • Works with — the supported apps, and a link back to this guide.

Preview

When subscriptions are on, the Quiz Builder Preview shows your real plans. If they can't be read (for example, a store with a storefront password, or recommendations that have no plan yet), the preview shows sample plans with a note above the preview, so you can still check the design. Shoppers always see your real plans.

Revenue and analytics

Orders placed from a quiz are already linked to it (see Shopify and WooCommerce). For quizzes with subscriptions on, ShopperQuiz also records which order lines were bought on a subscription:

  • Analytics → Subscriptions (Pro plan): subscription orders, subscription revenue, share of quiz revenue, subscribe rate (how many carted items shoppers chose to subscribe to), top subscribed products and the frequencies chosen.
  • Responses: subscribed items show a Subscription tag with the frequency, in both Added to Cart and Purchased.
  • Integrations get the subscription detail too:
IntegrationField
Google Analytics 4sq_subscription = yes on the purchase event, when the order includes a subscription
Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixelsq_subscription = yes on the Purchase event, when the order includes a subscription
Zapier, Webhookssubscription on each cart and order item (plan name, or empty), plus cart_has_subscription and order_has_subscription
HubSpotSubscribed products read Product (Subscription: Deliver every month) in the last cart and last order properties

Subscription revenue is the first order. Renewal orders are created later by your subscription app and are not counted as quiz revenue.

Troubleshooting

No subscribe option on the results page

  • Check that Offer subscribe & save on results is on for this quiz and saved.
  • Subscriptions need the Starter plan or above.
  • Check that the product has a subscription plan: it should show a subscribe option on its own product page. If the plan is on only some variants, the other variants are one-time.
  • On WooCommerce, update the ShopperQuiz plugin to 1.1.0 or later.

A product shows only "Subscribe & save" It is subscription-only in your subscription app (Shopify: Only sell this product with these purchase options; WooCommerce: a subscription product type, or force subscription).

The cart shows a product as one-time although the shopper chose subscribe The plan was changed or removed after the results page loaded, so the product was added one-time instead of being dropped. Check the plan in your subscription app.

Prices look different at checkout The results page shows prices in your store currency. If you sell in several currencies (Shopify Markets), checkout shows the shopper's local price; the subscription discount is the same.

Preview shows sample plans Your storefront is password-protected, or the recommended products have no plan yet. See Preview.
